Michael was born and educated in Perth, Western Australia. He has studied many aspects of music theory and production, from the science of acoustics and music synthesis, to the disciplines of classical, jazz, and contemporary music.

Having recently completed a PhD in pschoacoustics (the study of sound perception), he lectures in Songwriting, Music Technology and Acoustics at both UWA and WAAPA, while working as a freelance songwriter, producer, musical director and live performer.
